Rule 5 selection Matt Whitney was returned to the Tribe today in exchange for half of the $50,000 they originally gained when the Nationals picked him.
Whitney one of two rule 5 players lost by the Tribe had to make the National's 25 man roster and stick on it for the entire year.
His competition was rather stiff though as a corner infielder playing on a team with it's starting third baseman as arguably it's best player and two proven first basemen battling it out for a starting spot.
Whitney only had three hits in 28 plate appearances for the Nats. He'll start the year at Akron splitting time with Michael Aubrey at different positions and play some third base.
"Obviously, we're very pleased to get him back, he's a right-handed power bat, and we feel his ceiling is still very high." - Ross Atkins (Indian's Farm Director).
