Asdrubal Cabrera's fourth Herd Home Run wasn't enough for Buffalo as they ended the first half on a low note. J.D. Martin pitched a solid four innings giving up just two hits and one run while striking out four. Newly sent down Brian Slocum took the loss, further proving he is absolutely not very good.
The Bisons end the first half in 5th place, behind 18.5 games of Pawtucket.
Jeff Weaver started the other day and pitched three innings giving up three runs.. Quite frankly the way Matt Ginter pitched, I'm not even sure if we should bother with Weaver. He's already taken the roster spot of Frank Herrmann who was sent to Akron. Fausto's making his rehab start tonight and should be back with Ginter only having to make at least one or two starts.
Akron had to get by without Matt LaPorta and Wes Hodges, but they managed to score three runs. That wasn't enough to beat Reading as Chuck Lofgren made the start but took the loss. Matt Whitney hit home run number 7 on the year. Akron finishes up the first half tonight in the finale against Reading.

Akron will be without Matt LaPorta and Wes Hodges again tonight, but will get them back when the break is over on Thursday. Click LaPorta's name for a piece by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.
LaPorta went 1-3 with a single and a walk in the game, while Hodges had a double in his two at bats. Hector Rondon of the K-Tribe pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the World Team, but nearly let up a monster shot to Pirate's outfielder Andrew McCutchen. Rondon's World Team was a 3-0 victor over the US Team.
"That guy is the mayor of Akron," third baseman Wes Hodges joked. "When the rest of us strike out, we get booed. When he strikes out, he gets golf claps. It's definitely been funny to see the fans' reactions." (MLB.com)
Interesting tid-bit.. LaPorta played first base for the US Team.
Vinnie Pestano picked up his first Kinston save of the year as the K-Tribe won on the bats of Jason Denham and Niuman Romero. Each had three RBI, while Denham hit a home run. Shawn Nottingham also picked up his first Kinston win despite yielding three runs in five innings.
The K-Tribe gets a little taste of Bobby Jenks as he makes a rehab apperance on Monday Night. Sorry for making his name larger, Jenks seems to inflate everything.
Kelvin De La Cruz pitched well in the second game of the Captains Double Header, but it only went 7 innings and Lake County's offense got one hit. The first game was no better as Rob Bryson pitched two innings to give up three runs and get tagged with the loss.
Fear not Captains fans, for you get a glimpse of the PAST as Fausto Carmona makes his return to Lake County. Carmona makes his rehab start tonight and it brings up memories of that awesome season with Lake County that won over 100 games and took home the championship. The Captains will have a chance to win the title once again, but their second half has been less than desired. Carmona had 17 wins that year and a tiny 2.0something ERA to lead the Captains and he became the first Lake County player to reach the Indian club.
If you are in the area, go ahead and go check out Fausto pitch for Lake County.
Mahoning Valley got shutout in the first game of a Double Header on Sunday, but promptly took out their aggression in game two. P.J. Zocchi pitched 5 innings for his second win of the year and was backed by a 13 run output.
Zach Booker, Ryan Blair, and Ramon Hernandez all knocked in two runs, while third baseman and a favorite of mine Jeremie Tice his a two run home run. Everyone else but Lonnie Chisenhall and catcher Doug Pickens knocked in a run for the Scrappers.
Catching prospect Matt McBride hit his second GCL Indian home run in a Blue Jays rout on Saturday. McBride should probably be moving up soon.
Tony Lastoria talked to Wyatt Toregas about his recent surge of offensive baseball.
"Yeah, this is probably the best stretch I have ever had," said Toregas this past week in Akron. "I hope it keeps going because it is fun right now. I am not a big power guy, but just lately I am getting pitches to hit and I am not missing them. It makes it awesome. I am having a really good time right now and got a bunch of guys in here that are fun to play with and be around. This team is awesome. It is fun to show up everyday and hang out and kick some [butt] during the game." (Indians Minor League Insider)
There is also a piece on Beau Mills at Kinston and him playing first base.
