"I'm honored and privileged to get the opportunity to accomplish this," Lee said. "It's a magic number in this game."
"He's had a remarkable year," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "He did it in style" (Indians.com)
I'll just leave it at that.
Cliff Lee.. Just when you've run out of things to say about him, he gives you one more. 20 game winner.
I watch Cliff Lee and just listen to him talk. He is a changed guy. He hasn't changed his pitches or the way he throws the ball. Last night on Baseball Tonight, they asked him that and he was right, he didn't change a thing.
He did change his attitude though. He changed his focus, he changed his demeanor. He is still the bulldog of a pitcher he was, but he can now control that. With that control he can now control his pitches like no other.
"Wherever I put my glove, Cliff hits it," Shoppach said. "His control has been so good that we've had to mix in a few more balls in his last few starts." (Plain Dealer)
Will he have a magical year like this ever again? Probably not. But, Cliff Lee has made a change for the better.
Right now his .909 Winning Percentage is the best ever out of pitchers who had 20 decisions in a single season. He has 30% of his team's wins. We'll run over all the stats when he completes this historic year, as Cliff said, he has more to come.
I'm going to echo Terry Pluto. CC was a thing to watch, but he never put on the performance that Cliff Lee has. He simply hasn't.
The Indians are considering using a six man rotation, which would cut into Cliff Lee's starts, or they'd just skip someone every time around, who knows.
"It's an option we have," he said. "We're still looking into it. It depends on workload. It depends on how we want to use guys down the stretch." (Plain Dealer)
Oh and Cliff Lee didn't need the extra boost, but for some reason AJ Pierzynski gave it to him.
"He popped up, slammed the bat down and stared at me going down the line," Lee said. "I stared back. He was chirping from the dugout the rest of the game.It gave me extra energy. I appreciate that." (Plain Dealer)
Punch AJ said that Cliff started jawing at him.. I don't believe a guy like AJ over Cliff, I'm sure AJ was the one who stirred the pot.
"He should have been concentrating on the fact that he just won 20 games," Pierzynski said. (Plain Dealer)
If AJ knew anything, he'd know that Cliff Lee wasn't focused on 20, he was just trying to win.
Don't expect Hafner to get activated today.
"We probably won't activate him," manager Eric Wedge said. "We're going to talk to him and see where he is. We'll see how he feels." (Indians.com)
Travis Hafner went 1-3 last night in Buffalo's final game. Expect a big number of pitchers to get the call-up and Josh Barfield to return today. Seven is the number from what I've read. Jon Meloan, Michael Aubrey, Tom Mastny, Rich Rundles, Brian Slocum, Aaron Laffey in addition to Barfield. Rundles would take the 40 man roster spot that Andy Gonzalez had.
Paul Hoynes ponders if the Indians should make another run at CC Sabathia. Joel Skinner and Jamey Carroll chimed in on the play that was ruled a hit rather than an error to prevent him from thowing a no-hitter.
"I was reading on the Internet, and someone said that when a third baseman makes the same kind of play, charging a grounder and trying to barehand it, and drops it, it's a hit. But CC's play was a little different. I'm sure he's made it 1,000 times, but he had his back to the runner, and it's hard to judge where the runner is on that kind of play." (Plain Dealer)
I love Jamey Carroll. he uses the internet.
