No Luis Vizcaino signing yet, instead we get the official signing of relief pitcher Blaine Neal to a minor league deal. Vizcaino by the by will throw again today in a bullpen session. They should come to a decision by then.

Neal is a 31 year old who started the year in spring training with the Phillies but he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2005 s a member of both Boston and Colorado. His best year was in 2002 for Florida, when he went 3-0 with a 2.73 ERA in 33 IP.

The right-hander is a typical AAAA player, with the career 2.67 ERA, and last year he pitched for the Tigers Triple-A team in Toledo. He did very well for them last year as their closer, notching 26 saves and even had a stint on the Olympic team as well.

What the hell right?

We'll get to the game in a second. But of course, Eric Wedge talked and his job was a point of contention.

"I'm smart enough to recognize where we are as a ballclub," he said. "My entire energy goes into finding a way to help these guys get on track. That takes all the energy I have right now. So I don't spend time thinking about that. But I know it comes with the territory."
While he recognizes where we are, he knows why.
"I'm the manager," he said. "It is my fault. I'm not out there playing, but I'm the manager of this team, and I'm responsible for this club. I try to stay out of the way when things are going well and take full responsibility when they're not going well. The bottom line is, we're a better club than what we're showing and how we're playing. That has to be a direct reflection on me."

"I've got thick skin and broad shoulders," he said. "It comes with the territory of being a Major League manager. I believe in these guys, but we've got to do better. Whether it be not missing pitches at home plate, getting people out with two or three pitches or staying away from the walks, executing, hitting the cutoff man, getting bunts down, everything. Things are going to happen every now and again, because they're human and not widgets, but it can't happen as consistently as it's been."

He's kinda sounding beaten though, he's acknowledging the fact that he just overused a bunch of cliches.
"Every team is different from year to year," he said. "This year's team is different than last year's team and prior years. You've got to push every button, turn over every stone, kick every tire. I can't think of any more cliches right now, but I think you get the point."
All of this.. Provokes ideas.. Last night's game was a little good for the lineup, so it might delay some of these ideas, but Hoynes and CastroTurf dig up some of the ideas.
"Right now, we have to consider everything," said Wedge before the Indians opened a three-game series against Chicago on Monday night. "I don't want you just to isolate on that, but we are considering everything.
What's this mean?

Grady Sizemore down in the order. I'm sure many of you are going nuts right about now. I'm still not in favor of it, there is no one to replace him. They'll give Cabrera the shot at leadoff, but he doesn't really fit, other than the fact that he's got a hot bat right now.
"Just giving you that answer right now, is probably more than I've ever done (on the subject of dropping Sizemore in the lineup). There's nothing we haven't walked through or looked at internally or externally."
Anyway.. That's just one lineup move that was mentioned. There is also talk of Jamey Carroll coming up soon, which would create a move and the reason LaPorta hasn't been in the lineup the past two games is because Wedge wanted to give those "regulars" a chance after that meeting. Dellucci, your chance is up bubby.

There is also that talk that was mentioned awhile ago when I said the defense had to change a little bit. DeRosa though would go to first, play some outfield, as well as Garko, and LaPorta would play some first. Valbuena would get more time at second and Sir Peralta would play some third.

Going back to Grady Sizemore... Someone in the Indians Inbox suggested Choo for leadoff. Just, no.. He's too much of a run producer.

To the game....

It felt like baseball last night. Perhaps Victor sparked something with his comments.

"It felt like a real baseball game for once," DeRosa said. "To go out and play like we're capable of was good to see."

"That's what we're talking about," Wedge said. "That's the type of baseball we need to see."

And as Wedge was saying.. We just need to do it, not talk about and last night they did it.
"We scored early," said manager Eric Wedge. "Pavano was very good. He controlled the baseball game. The bullpen came out and Aaron Laffey and Raffie Betancourt did a good job. That's what we're talking about. That's the kind of baseball we need to play."
Pavano meanwhile thought he could have gone deeper, which is fine. He had pitches left, but he was starting to lose it..
"This is a game I need to go deeper in," Pavano said. "I could have been smarter with some pitches. I was more aggressive than I should have been."
I don't think so actually. No... In that game, be aggressive, throw the strikes bud. Do whatever it was you were doing earlier. If guys start getting on base, that's fine. But don't walk people in that large of a lead.

Oh and Jhonny Peralta is feeling better. The benching even gave him confidence.
"I feel better," Peralta said. "With two days off, I tried to work to go inside the pitch and hit to right field, and it helped."

"When Eric Wedge told me he was going to sit me down, he said, 'I know it's tough, but you're going to be fine,'" said Peralta. "He gave me a lot of confidence."
Let's make it two in a row now boys.

Injury updates all around.

Another BP for Travis Hafner and now the plan is for him to do it again today or tomorrow and then go on rehab with Columbus on Friday. No word on how long it will be, but it needs to be very quick if you ask me.

Joe Smith is about a week and a half to two weeks away from one himself. That setback really put him off-track.

Scott Lewis is in Goodyear and playing catch, he's ways away because of his setback.

Jake Westbrook's news is good. He'll add an extra 15 pitches/one inning every week to his workload if he can tolerate it. They are trying to get him up to 65 so he can go on a rehab assignment.

Jamey Carroll was good last night for the Clippers. He had a few hits and should be ready to go any day now. Someone is going to be on the chopping block, I hope it's not Barfield, know it's not Valbuena, and am curious to see what is going to happen.

Talked about Al Pawlowski the other day and the reason for that happening was a vacation, not a suspension. I remember them talking about this being a vacation, a scheduled one, for some time now, so I don't know where the talk of suspension is coming from.

But apparently Underwood screwed up on air. He pulled a Danyelle Sargent (hey Daunte Culpepper close to getting traded!) and said the naughty f word that isn't fire truck. For the record, I you tubed Matt Underwood and there is another Matt Underwood? He is on a nickelodeon show or something? That's stupid. Anywwwaaaay.
"The half-inning ended, and we had a hockey game on in the background,'' Underwood said. "I saw a guy score a goal, and he was jumping on the glass like he was trying to do the Lambeau Leap. I said, 'What a bleeping joke,' with no idea the microphone was still on. But I'm responsible for everything that comes out of my mouth, so for that I'm truly sorry.''
Wish I heard that.

Caught this in one of the Hoynes articles.
"Matt has been taking a lot of ground balls there as well as working on his outfield play," said Wedge. "I just want it to be an option for us."
Matt as in Matt LaPorta.. Could he be at first base here in the next few days? If so, why is he taking time away from Garko and not Dellucci?

And now in the morning, Look at this in reference to LaPorta.
"We're trying to give him regular work over there," Wedge said. "I just want it to be an option for us. We can still DH [Ryan] Garko or throw Garko in the outfield."
Interesting..
