Congratulations are in order for the 2009 Cleveland Indians representative to the MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis, Victor Martinez!
As it should be, Victor and starter Joe Mauer will be the only catchers on the roster, for now, both making their third appearance in the ASG.
What's the tragic part in all this?
Because Josh Hamilton was voted in by the fans, that created one less spot for the outfielders because he's missed too much time to be considered deserving of the nod. That would have opened up one more spot for Adam Lind or Shin-Soo Choo.
Lind is on the Final Vote ballot, Choo is not.
Choo deserves it, let's be honest. He's second in the AL in OBP behind Kevin Youkilis, he's right up there with most of the outfielders in RBI, he's 13-13 in Stolen Base attempts.
He deserves it.
Unfortunately, this team doesn't deserve more than one All-Star... That's probably the reason he isn't on it.
Probably also the reason Cliff Lee isn't, that and the fact he has horrible run-support and those seven losses make people say, ehhhhhhhhh he's not deserving of it.
Anyway.
Congrats to Victor, he deserves it. He carried the offense for a point there and while he's in a bit of a slump, he deserves this nod. Only Joe Mauer has had a season comparable to Victor and he had one less month to do it. No other catcher really comes close to what these two have done so far.
